How to Choose Between a Dog and a Cat

- You have always had a dream of owning an animal, but the circumstances were never right. Now, though, you have come to the point in your life where you have the time and energy to take on a companion and are considering add a pet to your life. If you are unsure what type of furry friend is best for you— a dog or a cat— these tips will guide your choice.

1/ Have an idea about what you are looking for. It depends on what you want.
- If you're a person that isn't home very often and is busy with work, then a cat might be better. Most cats don't depend on you that much for companionship. Cats will do fine in most environments - whether you live in a small house or a mansion with a huge yard.

- Dogs are better if you would like a companion. Most dogs don't like being left alone for too long. If you want a pet that you can go outside and run with, go swimming with, or just one that is more adventurous, get a dog.

2/ Find out about the breeds you are considering, either through research or talking to knowledgeable people. This applies to both species. Some cats need more attention than others. Some dogs are more vocal than others. Some breeds tend to have worse tempers than others. All these details are important if you want to find a pet that will suit you.

3/ Be sure that your home will be good for the pet. If you've wanted a dog for your whole life and you are finally able to get one, but you live in an apartment, you might need to get a small dog if they are even allowed. Most often, though, cats, birds, hamsters or fish are better for apartments.

4 Find the animal. Now that you've decided on the species and breed, you need to search the internet or your neighbourhood shelters to find what you're looking for. Tell the owner or shelter people you're interested in the animal so they can put it on hold for you. Then return to the place every day and spend time with the animal or take it as a foster pet for a while until you are becoming familiar with what she or he is like.
